The International CES Innovations Design and Engineering Awards were announced today at Unveiled@NY in New York. The awards honor the latest products in consumer electronics that demonstrate excellence in design, engineering and innovation.

The keypad implementation on the LG AX490 flip phone is a full alphanumeric version of Fastap, a next-generation patented keypad design technology that uses raised and lowered keys powered by error-prevention software for error and care-free operation. In combination with the keypad’s additional one-touch press-to-anything capabilities the LG AX490 delivers easy discovery, access and use of the phone’s features and today’s mobile applications.

As CES celebrates its 40th anniversary, the mobile and consumer electronics industries are beginning to realize the shortcomings of a technology debuted 42 years ago at the New York World’s Fair, the 12-button touch-tone keypad. Although considered innovative at the time, it was obviously not designed to encourage usage of the powerful mobile data services and messaging applications available on today’s mobile devices. It is appropriate that the Fastap Keypad Technology is bestowed with an International CES Innovations design and engineering 2007 Honoree Award at Unveiled@NY also in New York.
