Anoto Digital Pen and Paper Go Extreme with Swedish Explorer Johan Ernst Nilson Print E-mail

LUND, Sweden - Swedish explorer Johan Ernst Nilson is about to test Anoto’s (STO:ANOT) Digital Pen and Paper technology to the extreme as he gears up for the ultimate climb in his Seven Summits challenge. In December 2006, Johan will use the technology as he climbs Mount Carstensz in Papua New Guinea and Mount Vinson in Antarctica, before going on to tackle Mount Everest next year. During the expeditions, Johan will use the technology for gathering data, writing his journal and sketching routes. This data will then be stored in the pen and transferred via a docking station or wirelessly to a laptop computer at base camp.

Earlier this year, the Anoto Digital Pen and Paper technology proved more than a match for the extreme temperatures, altitude, humidity and wind speeds that Johan encountered during his expedition on Aconcagua in Argentina – the highest peak outside the Himalayas, and widely considered to be one of the world’s toughest mountaineering challenges.

“When climbing the world’s highest mountains, bulky equipment and excess weight are a no-go,” says Johan Ernst Nilson. “On Aconcagua I needed to be able to do my documentation and sketching right there on the mountain. I also needed to send the data quickly to my team members, partners and media around the world. The digital pen worked brilliantly – it allowed me to do all that in a natural way while taking hardly any space in my pocket.”

“Johan is perhaps the ultimate ‘field worker’,” says Ebba Åsly Fåhraeus, VP Sales Marketing Forms at Anoto Group AB. “More than most of our users, he needs a reliable, easy-to-use tool for data capture that still permits complete mobility. The fact that Johan uses the pen in the harshest conditions is the ultimate proof of the Anoto Extreme Functionality. If it works under these conditions, it will work just about anywhere. During the final three expeditions in the Seven Summits project, Johan will also be sending data straight to our web site, and we’re very excited to be able to follow his adventures closely from the other side of the world.”

Johan Ernst Nilson is one of Europe’s most qualified explorers, with more than 20 expeditions on seven continents under his belt. He has worked with scientific research in the polar and Himalayan regions, and is a talented photographer and film producer with Discovery Channel and National Geographic, among others. Johan is currently pursuing one of his greatest personal ambitions – to complete the Seven Summits; an attempt to reach the highest point on every continent, with Mount Everest as the ultimate challenge.
